So with fear out of the way, what kicked my butt in gear? I love to write and I want to do it well. Over the summer I attended IGHR in Birmingham, Alabama for the first time. Whoa! What an amazing experience. I attended Writing and Publishing for Genealogists, coordinated by Thomas W. Jones, Ph.D., CG, CGL, FASG, FUGA, FNGS. I learned, and learned, and learned some more. I learned that I wasn't as hot as I thought I was, and I learned how to get there--PRACTICE.
During one particular exercise Dr. Jones commented that two of the students' writing showed a clear and distinct voice--something we should all aspire to. These two students, Harold Henderson and Kimberly Powell, had something in common--they wrote all the time. So this is me, subjecting the unsuspecting geneapublic to my opinions and ramblings in an attempt to better my writing and define my voice.
Hopefully you will benefit somewhere along the way.
P.S. Do you know who else has a great writing voice? Kerry Scott over at Clue Wagon. No really, she totally cracks me up.
Christy,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the geneablogging world! I'm sure you will have plenty to offer your readers.

Christy,
ReplyDeleteI knew that you would succumb to blogging eventually...it will be good for you!
Interesting story about Tom Jones observation, and I agree with you about Kerry. There are several other "unique voice" bloggers that I admire and enjoy...I won't name them for fear of missing someone!
Great start Christy! I had those exact same fears. Some days I still sit down to write thinking I have absolutely nothing to say. But if I just start writing SOMETHING its amazing how the ideas surface and before I know it I have a pretty good post. Keep up the great writing!
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm hooked! Why not share your information with the genea world? We are waiting! We need all the help we can get.
ReplyDeleteThanks! You all just made it look so fun, how could I resist?
ReplyDeleteAha! We got you! Welcome to the wonderful world of geneablogging Christy! Being the Head Honchess of SLIG, you have more to blog about than you might think. I look forward to reading each and every post you make!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sheri! Who wouldn't want to follow your example?
ReplyDeleteA belated welcome. I have full confidence that you have plenty to say! PS You're right about Kerry Scott!! She cracks me up too. Sheri Fenley's right up there with her...
ReplyDeleteWait, that's me! How did I not see this until now? I'm further behind than I thought...but thank you for the mention!
